The Aeronautical Society of S. Thomas’ was revived on the 18^th of September by a handful of aviation enthusiasts. The goal of the club was to encourage fellow students who are interested in aeronautical engineering and guide them to a successful career.

At the initiation of the club the members were informed that the club was to have regular workshops to harness the interests of the students and to help them further in knowledge on the subject in aviation that they are interested in.

Further to make sure the consistency of the club we decided to team up with the Model Railroad Club and the Automobile Club and organise a large scale exhibition along with a workshop so that we can not only hone our organising capabilities but also give the public a good view of what the club’s capabilities and spark and interest about aviation.  We hope that this project will keep the club in its best interest.

Hornby

Hornby is a household name and is famous as the UK brand leader in the model railway hobby. The company’s founder was Frank Hornby (1863 – 1936) who applied for a patent in 1901 to protect an invention he called ‘Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People’. Nobody then could have imagined how this product would influence the model railway hobby that we know today.

Bachmann Company

The Kader Company was established in 1948 with the purpose of making models and toys for export around the world. In 1952 Kader made the first Model Trains for Bachmann‘s American market. This relationship developed and prospered until 1984, when Kader acquired the Bachmann Company in its entirety.

The Kader Company also produces Model Railway equipment for other Model brands. Bachmann Industries (Europe) was set up in England during 1989. It‘s initial product range, called Branchline, consisted of moulds used to produce the Mainline range of Railway models. These had been produced for Mainline by the Kader factory.

In 1992 Bachmann Industries (Europe) purchased the continental manufacturer Liliput and a German sales office was established, this handles all Marketing, sales and product development for the Liliput brand.

The start of the new millennium heralded yet more acquisitions and growth for the Bachmann group of companies. 2000 saw the British ‘N’ scale manufacturer Graham Farish purchased by Bachmann Europe plc. This range of models has also had its production transferred to the Kader factory, joining both Branchline and Liliput.

Kader is, by volume, the largest manufacturer of Model Railways in the world.

Atlas Model Railroad Company

Atlas Model Railroad Company, Inc. has its roots in model railroad track and accessory making through invention, innovation and ingenuity. Atlas has a proud reputation as a family-owned business and is well-known for quality and excellence. Founded by Stephan Schaffan Sr. in 1924, Atlas Tool Company began as a general machine shop in a small garage at 330 Waverly Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. Stephan Schaffan Sr. emigrated from Czechoslovakia around the turn of the century and brought his machine and toolmaking skills with him. MINIATURE TRANSPORTATION 2008

Miniature Transportation 2008

Model Railroad Club of S.Thomans’ College, Mount Lavinia has organized an exhibition of model trains, miniature aircrafts and miniature vehicles. Which is scheduled to be held on 29th of February and 1st of March 2008 at the college hall.

The exhibition will be declared open on 29th at 11.30 am. It is to be kept open to the public and students of other schools from 1.30 pm. to 8.00 pm on the same day and from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm, the following day.

This is the inaugural miniature Transportation Exhibition organized by the club. Mainly, the exhibits are collections of college students. In addition, some exhibits of the old boys of the college and special invitees will be displayed. We hope this effort would benefit the enthusiasts of miniature models

TRALE ‘09

THOMIAN RAIL, AIR & LOGISTICS EXHIBITION

Organized by the Aeronautical Society, Automobile Club and The Model Railroad Club of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.

The Automobile Club, Aeronautical Society and the Model Railroad Club have in the past been able to emphasize on the needs of human transportation through various projects. To take these projects one step further the above three clubs have decided to organize an exhibition named ‘TRALE ‘09’ emphasizing the importance of transportation.

Do you want HO or N or maybe O or S? Perhaps you want one of the Garden Railroad scales or gauge or… Well, what is scale and gauge for that matter? Briefly, scale is the ratio of the model to the real thing or ‘prototype’. Gauge is the distance between the rails unless you are thinking ‘tinplate’ or ‘scaleplate’ like Lionel®, Marx®, American Flyer® or MTH® among others.

Railroads reflect the times they operated in, and vice versa.

Building a model railroad leads to learning about the real things.

Railroads embraced the full range of history. In the United States, railroads were major factors in, and were greatly affected by, the labor movement, race relations, the rise and fall of the Guilded Age and its robber barons, and so on.

Railroads were, and are, equally important in the histories of other countries.

Basic Carpentry and Electrical Skills

If you’ve never sawed wood or stripped some wire, You Will!

Building a model railroad requires these skills.

You might think that they are “hard” — they aren’t, you just need to start down the path.

You’ll be surprised how easy it is to pick them up!

Economics

Railroads are economic entities.

They move raw materials and manufactured goods from place to place.

The patterns of these movements are all driven by economics.

Modelbuilding

This is pretty straight forward! After all, we are building a Model Railroad.

There are a whole range of skills that you’ll develop over time.

Artistic Techniques

Building scenery and weathering cars, among others, all require a bit of an artistic touch. We can learn that “less is more” (for instance, sometimes just a bit of weathering on a car is all that’s really needed).

We can learn that we don’t always need a perfect rendition of something, sometimes all we really need is to give the impression.

How To Research

As you get more interested in model railroading, you might decide to build more accurate models.

To do this you will need to research “the real things”.

You’ll want to know exactly how something was built or used.

To do that you’d need to locate documents or pictures.

All of this takes research.

Logical Thought and Planning

From novice model railroader to Master Model Railroader (MMR), logical thought and planning are important.

Everything from figuring out the right steps for building a kit to designing a layout to developing an operating plan for your railroad all require logical thought and planning.

3D and Spatial Visualization

When you decide to take on scratch-building and kit-bashing, you’ll quickly learn some of these skills. We often have to visualize how things will finally look, or how they will go together, long before they are done.

Develops Manual Skills

This is pretty self-evident.

To build a model railroad requires some manual dexterity and skills.

You can’t be “all thumbs” to build one.

And if you think you are all-thumbs, you’ll quickly discover that you are not all thumbs.

Basic Engineering

Model Railroads themselves require a bit of engineering to construct.

We don’t want the bench work to collapse or the electrical wiring to burst into flames! This is self-evident.

But we can also learn a bit of engineering by studying the prototypes for the models we are building;

Why bridges are build this way and not that?

Why did the railroad go this way instead of that way?

How does an engine work?

Geography

Railroads don’t exist in a vacuum.

They go through the landscape.

There are mountains and plains, forests and rivers, towns and cities.

Model railroading can develop basic understandings of all of these geographic features.

Furthermore, if you decided to research and model a specific real railroad you can learn a lot about the specific geographic regions where that railroad operated.

The Internet and the Web

You can even learn a lot about The Internet and how to make and run web sites. After all, we put together this web site.

But the best part of it all is that you are not forced to learn much. You can derive as much, or as little, education from the hobby as you want. After all, sometimes we just want to have fun!
